Flip'd! The Movie

Flip'd! is an 18 minute film produced entirely at MAC Studio. It is the result of a collaboration between mother and son. It was conceptualized and written by Stephanie McCarthy - an established writer and tutor of film, who in this case also acted as the primary character, Eve. Her son Jim McCarthy is the owner of MACS and filled the role of producer, director, camera, composer etc. Essentially Flip'd! is a zero budget film. It was shot entirely on a consumer DV camera, while sound, music and editing was done using the resources here at MACS.

Synopsis:
Eve wakes one morning to yet another birthday. Pressured by her husband to "pretty yourself up for me tonite!" she struggles to become superficially and instantly younger, her day lurching from one disaster to the next. Eventually Eve's instincts guide her towards happiness deep and real and beyond all expectations.

Aims of the project:

  • to produce a film using passion, time and existing equipment, but zero budget.
  • to produce a film with essentially one actor and just two people covering every filmaking task.
  • to demonstrate how a film can convey an emotional journey within a simple yet multi-dimensional story without using dialogue.
  • to demonstrate how music can serve in place of dialogue whilst also acting as underscore.
  • to demonstrate the universal truth that each woman fights a quiet and desperate battle against the ravages of age, relinquishing the struggle only when she discovers inner happiness.

The process of creating Flip'd!, while involving many hours of hard work, was immensely satisfying with plenty of laughs and fun.
